For some people, it’s not such a big deal when they start losing their hair. They simply shave their heads and embrace their new look. For other people though, going bald can have a pretty serious negative impact on their confidence and self esteem. For the people that do not want to accept baldness there are some things you can do to combat hair loss. One option would be to buy a toupee. The problem is that unless you can afford a lot of money for a high quality hairpiece, it’s going to be obvious and not look very good.

Another way to combat hair loss would be surgery. The surgical procedures today are a lot more advanced and look nothing like the cornrowed plugs of yesteryear. Today’s hair replacement surgery is both an art and a science and is a really good, natural looking option if you can afford it.There are also prescription medications available. Propecia is a medication that is available in pill form and it inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT which is the hormone that is responsible for causing male pattern baldness.

As with any prescription medication there are possible side effects. Side effects with Propecia are rare and only occur in approximately 1% to 2% of the people that take it but the side effects are generally of a sexual nature and may include erectile dysfunction.Minoxidil is another medication that inhibits DHT but unlike Propecia it is applied topically and not ingested. Minoxidil is the only topical treatments approved by the FDA to treat hair loss and has been proven to stop hair loss and regrow hair.

Minoxidil is also available over the counter so there is no need to get a prescription. There are also a number of natural herbal supplements that can be taken to help reverse hair loss. One of the most promising is Saw Palmetto. Saw Palmetto is a plant that is native to the southern Atlantic coast of North America. Saw Palmetto has not been approved by the FDA and more studies will need to be conducted but it appears that this plant can also inhibit DHT.There are are many options available today to help combat hair loss.
